Tim Fite Aligns With Ben Kweller For U.S. Dates
Over The Counter Culture “Best Free Online Album Of The Year”
Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Tim Fite – who has garnered rave reviews for his recent digital-only release, Over The Counter Culture and is currently plotting his proper sophomore Anti- album – will appear as the special guest on Ben Kweller’s U.S. tour this summer. Commencing on July 30th at Southpaw in Fite’s home city, the musician’s support commitment to Kweller runs through August 26th.
Fite, who has made Over The Counter Culture available for free download through his website (www.timfite.com) since February 20th, has reaped praise from the blogosphere and traditional media alike. FreeAlbumsGalore (http://freealbums.blogsome.com) touted is as “the best free online album of the year,” adding, “It’s a brash, rude social protest album that slaps you in the face but wins you over with its wit, infectious beats and perverse charm.”
The fifteen track OTCC is a blistering examination of commercial culture and it's adverse effects on life in general, and on rap music specifically. The Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot wrote, “One of the best albums of the new year can’t be bought,” insisting, “Over the Counter Culture is both a critique and a celebration of hip-hop. It’s packed with crackling beats, wicked humor and ‘did he just say that?’ audacity.”
Elsewhere, The Boston Globe called OTCC “a collection of scathing, acerbic observations about modern consumerism – in particular its effect on rap culture,” while Billboard proclaimed the “must-hear” disc “a scathingly sarcastic look and consumerism, politics and corporate hip-hop.”
“You cannot address politics about consumerism and put it out in the same way that any record would come out,” says Fite in the Billboard feature of the decision to give his music away. “It would be wrong. It is not classy. As much as I need to pay my bills, and it’d be great to sell some records, this is not a record for sale. These ideas are not for sale. These ideas should be for free.”
Ditto for Tim’s recent video for “Camoflage” – in which he intones “a fashion statement for a fascist nation.” The Ryan Foregger-directed clip has pulled in an astounding 480,000 plays via You Tube since February and can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6gZrior5II
