The Milk Carton Kids Delight On Conan
Los Angeles duo The Milk Carton Kids returned to the television show Conan last night to perform the song “The City Of Our Lady” from their new album Monterey. The song features the band’s beautifully intertwining voices and virtuosic guitar work.
Before beginning the song, singer and guitarist Joey Ryan deadpanned to the audience, “this is highly unorthodox, but at Conan’s request, we’re playing a very short song. We were here before, and it didn’t go so well the last time, so he said we could come back if we just hardly played at all. So now we have to kill, actually, a little bit of time to make the show run the right length.” Ryan then talked to singer and guitarist Kenneth Pattengale about his decision to wear a “bolo tie with a horse on it, which was not approved” before launching into “The City of Our Lady.” Afterwards Conan seemed genuinely moved and remarked, “That was amazing. You should get more time than anyone else.”

Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan wrote and recorded Monterey, which Uncut Magazine proclaimed “simply gorgeous,” on stages of concert halls, churches, and theaters across North America. It is a process that allowed them to perform with the same fearlessness and spontaneity usually only achieved in concert. As singers, their renowned harmonies move farther apart, allowing the two individual identities emerge, all the while remaining lush and soaring, the beauty more apparent for the showing of their scars.
The Milk Carton Kids will be touring this Fall in support of Monterey performing in the biggest and most prestigious venues of their career. From New York City’s Town Hall, to Los Angeles’s Theatre at The Ace Hotel, to Atlanta’s Symphony Hall, the ideal settings have been chosen to enable the duo to replicate the nuances and dynamics of their stirring new album.
The meticulously curated dates of this tour will provide established fans and newcomers alike exemplary settings in which to experience The Milk Carton Kids - two intricately intertwining voices and guitars, immensely potent songwriting, and doses of genuinely entertaining between-song banter.
Critical Acclaim For The Milk Carton Kids’ Monterey:
"this is the closest they’ve come to capturing the majestic intimacy of their concerts. It’s no slight to say there’s not much here beyond the classic songcraft, the splendor of their high-lonesome harmonies, and the way their guitars entwine and frame the songs so beautifully. That’s enough to cast a spell. - The Boston Globe
"It's hard to overstate how beautiful the music of the milk carton kids is...their voices, their harmonies, their melodies...just so breathtaking." - NPR All Songs Considered
"Everything here is brimming over with the heart and soul of folk music, and Pattengale’s impressive lead guitar adds its sparkling magic to every tune.” - Relix
"Two unassuming guys dressed in suits, singing subdued original songs in close harmony with acoustic guitars, doesn't seem like a likely 21st-century musical success story. That is, until you see and hear Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan perform live around a single microphone. The two Los Angeles residents have extraordinary musical communication, and their songs really come alive onstage.” - World Cafe
