Stereogum is premiering a new song from Doe Paoro featuring vocal accompaniment, and production by, Son Little.
The track is called “Shadows” and showcases the two acclaimed artists singing on a beautifully soulful composition they wrote together with nuances of classic seventies Stevie Wonder, late era Beatles and something profoundly personal and new sounding. As Paoro explains, “I was really inspired by the depth and clarity of his music. And this is something I felt when we were writing lyrics together. All these ideas boiled down into this really pure statement. How things can be very simple and deep at the same time.”
Son Little adds, “I think we kind of talked our way into it. We wrote down our conversation. That was the first time we met, and for your first conversation to become a song, is kind of a special thing. I think we both came at this with our own experiences. We’ve both had are experiences of light and dark times.”
Son Little’s self-titled Anti- debut album was called “a potent collection of soulful new Americana” by NOISEY. He recently won a Grammy for producing Mavis Staples’ Best American Roots Performance of the song "See That My Grave is Kept Clean.’
On her recent album After, Doe Paoro drew on influences ranging from Carole King to Aretha Franklin to create a mesmerizing hybrid of R&B, synthpop, and indie-leaning electro rooted in an earthy minimalism. Nylon wrote, “Paoro creates songs that are at once intimate and expansive, with lyrics that travel a wide emotional terrain between the poles of love and loss.”
