NPR First Listen Premieres New Daniel Lanois Album
NPR’s First Listen is premiering the visionary new album Flesh And Machine by revered musician-producer-sonic explorer Daniel Lanois.
The record arrives on October 27th, marking yet another audacious venture for the man who helped propel ambient as Brian Eno’s protégé and guided iconic works as producer for Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, U2 and more. Exploring the ever evolving relationship between musicians and technology, Flesh And Machine takes organic instrumentation and alters the sounds with an assortment of recording technologies in real time. The result of this approach was vividly captured with a recent filmed performance of Lanois’ song “Opera” which premiered via href="http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2014/09/09/daniel-lanois-flesh-and-machine-opera/">The Wall Street Journal. After viewing the clip, NPR’s Robin Hilton remarked, "Opera" is dark and glossy, full of drama, with a brilliant build to it that grows more and more chaotic. Lanois says he wanted to make the year's best headphones album. If "Opera" is any indication, he may have pulled it off.”
Flesh And Machine was initially conceived as an ambient album, and tracks such as ‘Forest City’ take the classic Brian Eno albums that he worked on Ambient 4: On Land (1982) and Apollo: Atmospheres And Soundtracks (1983) as a wonderful bedrock to stand on to see the sonic future.Flesh And Machine absolutely bristles with new ideas and offers powerful evidence of Lanois' standing as an influential purveyor and innovator of experimental electronic music.
This November 10th at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple, Lanois will curate “ANTI-THESIS.” The evening will feature performances from Lanois, The Antlers and Tinariwen as well as special guest Lonnie Holley. It is a celebration of music from vastly different origins which exists outside of traditional genres, structures and rules.
