New York City Duo Purr Share Video For New Song “The Natural”
Indie pop duo Purr are sharing their lyrically wry yet cutting song “The Natural” today, a country-nodding track that treads a line between self-effacing and self-accepting.
“The song takes on growing up and getting older—that trope (and the truth) of trying to make it while you’re still young and the ways in which we seem to perform as we strive to project our authentic selves. Of course, there’s some love involved too…” band member Eliza Callahan said in more detail. The track’s long shot video serves as a visual interpretation of the song’s free-wheeling musings, with a camera lens that slowly pulls back to reveal Eliza as an actor in her own story—the artifice is revealed. A duo comprised of the New York City-born Callahan and Jack Staffen, they initially began playing together just after the two had graduated high school when they wrote their first song together and began their first musical project under their own names, Jack and Eliza. In 2018 they closed the book on Jack and Eliza, started Purr and released their debut LP, Like New in late February 2020, which FADER called “storybook psych-pop with old school New York charm.”
Last year Purr released the stand-along singles “STM” and “Many Days”, and Eliza, who is just finishing an MFA at Columbia University and a novel project, expanded on the meaning and influences behind these two tracks in a personal essay for the TalkHouse; read that here.
