Mavis Staples Joins Presidents Obama, Clinton & Carter At LBJ Library
From her early days with the Staples Singers performing freedom songs and marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, through her 2007 examination of the legacy of civil rights in the post-Katrina world – the Ry Cooder-produced album We’ll Never Turn Back – Mavis Staples has always been an important voice within the movement.
In this tradition, she will be performing at the LBJ Civil Rights summit in Austin, TX on 4/9 and 4/10 (the event runs from 4/8-10). The event will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson. Throughout the event, there will be speeches by Presidents Obama, Clinton, Carter & others.
Ms. Staples has been enjoying a career renaissance as of late with her aforementioned Grammy nominated 2007 album along with 2010’s Grammy winning You Are Not Alone, produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and the Tweedy produced, Grammy nominated 2013 album, One True Vine.
To allow everyone to enjoy the Civil Rights Summit, April 8, 9 and 10, 2014, the LBJ Presidential Library—in collaboration with Google and Longhorn Network—will live stream each of the Summit programs on their website, CivilRightsSummit.org.
