Lost In The Trees Past Life In Stores Now
The new album by Lost In The Trees has arrived in stores. The record is called Past Life and finds the group embracing a sparser, modern more rhythmic sound to overwhelming critical praise. As Spin recently wrote, "What was once an orchestral-folk six-piece is now an electro-rock foursome that values minimalism and pulsing grooves. But under the leadership of frontman Ari Picker, the North Carolina unit retains its richness."
The group has gone from an orchestral six piece to a lean four-piece. It is also the first time they have worked with an outside producer in Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective.) Pitchfork.com calls their re-imagined sound “refreshingly streamlined and direct."
In conjunction with the album's release, Spin.com is premiering a performance Lost In The Trees did recently at the MOOG factory sound lab in Asheville, NC. The group rearranged the title track “Past Life” on the spot to be improvised on three Moog synthesizers and electronic drums. Early Critical Praise For Past Life:
"A chilling, straightforward album that is more concerned with soulful riffs, pulsing bass lines and soaring vocal melodies...this might be the best Lost in the Trees release yet." - Filter
“Ari Picker and his North Carolina band, Lost In The Trees, creates an illustrious world of spectral movings and gusts.. These are tantalizing stories of drifting people who find that they can isolate their most intimate desires and their most cherished relationships, letting them roll forever as some form of blazed, golden loop." - Daytrotter
"The album still contains the subtle emotions and thoughtful atmosphere of past Lost In The Trees LPs, with Picker’s delicate tenor voice at the emotional center. But it allows for more space, clarity and immediacy. The changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary." - Magnet
"The songs carry in their most painful moments startling beauty, and in their sweetest notes the space for great loss." - NPR
“Translating deeply personal soul-searching into universal yearning, LITT’s sparkling narcolepsy dances beneath shimmering electro-rock canopies... An unraveling labyrinth, “Past,” maps earnest journeys through uncertain currents, navigating gilded will with glowing vocals and solemn involvement through intimate instruments." - Maximumink.com
"The resulting music is refreshingly streamlined and direct... Picker sounds revivified, as if he's having more fun, and the feeling is mutual. After they've spent so long swirling high up in the rarified air, it's exciting to hear Lost in the Trees planting their music so firmly in the body, their feet on the ground, tapping." - Pitchfork.com
