Lido Pimienta Serenades The Sea On “He Venido Al Mar”
Colombian-born avant-Latin artist Lido Pimienta has shared the short and extended versions of “He Venido al Mar” (“I’ve Come Down to the Sea”) today, an exuberant composition written for the film Calladita (aka The Quiet Maid) that premiered last November at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and will be released in cinemas across Spain on May 24th. Presented by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven), the film’s protagonist is Ana (Paula Grimaldo), a witty, hard-working young woman and Colombian migrant who discovers her own ways of enjoying the summer while working as a maid for a wealthy family of art dealers at a luxurious mansion in Costa Brava, Spain. “I resonated with this character and her attitude to enjoy life no matter what and in every step of the way, with open eyes and a badass attitude,” Pimienta reflects. “In the lyrics I say, ‘I am the soil and the seed for my family’ and I truly believe this, in my heart. I do anything to see my children and my community happy and proud, and sometimes there are people more powerful and scary trying to dim our light, but we somehow persevere. ‘I don't know where I’m going, but I got joy in my heart.’ It’s all about that line, never lowering our gaze, for nobody, never cowering or apologizing for being ourselves and to always and forever defend our right to be joyful and free.”
Pimienta’s contribution to the Calladita soundtrack marks another achievement in her fruitful journey into film and TV. In 2022, Pimienta debuted LIDO TV at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), her fresh and fabulous take on the variety show format that tackles topical social issues like colonialism, feminism, and privilege with humor and heart over six episodes. Known for her borderless blend of electro-cumbia, Pimienta’s last album Miss Colombia (2020) was met with wide critical acclaim, earning an 8.0 from Pitchfork, 4 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone, Album of the Week at Stereogum, a GRAMMY nomination in the Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album category, and a Latin GRAMMY nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Pimienta recently filmed a dynamic Boiler Room DJ set live from Bogotá, Colombia, available to stream here. Listen to Miss Colombia.
