Kelly Hogan Shines On Huffington Post A-SIDES

Songstress Kelly Hogan was recently featured on The Huffington Post's A- Sides with Jon Chattman. Filmed at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, Hogan plays the music teacher, introducing her band before running through an absolutely scorching version of the Robyn Hitchcock penned title song of her critically heralded new album I Like To Keep Myself In Pain.

On her new album Hogan mines the intersection between classic pop, country and soul, utilizing her incredible voice to interpret compositions penned for her by musical luminaries including M. Ward, Vic Chesnutt, Andrew Bird, Magnetic Fields, Robyn Hitchcock and more. She is backed on the album by an all-star band consisting of R&B legends Booker T. Jones and James Gadson (Bill Withers, Beck) as well as talented young lions Gabe Roth (of Daptone Records, the Dap-Kings) and Scott Ligon.

Critical Praise For I Like To Keep Myself In Pain:

"Kelly Hogan is one of the finest and most musically astute vocalists working in American popular music..."I Like to Keep Myself in Pain not only puts her in the spotlight where she belongs, it's an instant classic that's as strong as any record that she's appeared on, no small achievement given her résumé." - All Music

"The flame of Kelly Hogan's talent has been smoldering in the shadows for years. Her first solo album in 11 years, I Like To Keep Myself In Pain, is set to be her long-overdue breakout record." - Billboard

"A midcareer classic for an artist whose talents have long been appreciated but neer really captured on her own album. "I Like to Keep Myself in Pain" works as both a career summing up and a fascinating introduction to one of the most accomplished, underappreciated vocalists of the last two decades." - Chicago Tribune

"A longtime indie-pop favorite best known for harmonizing with her friend Neko Case, Hogan has gone top shelf for her first solo effort in eleven years: she's gathered songs from her finest friends, soaked them in country, soul and vintage arrangements and recorded them with an unmatchable band. The resulting set goes deep emotionally even as it shines as a lesson in what perfect pop can be. " NPR, All Songs Considered

"Hogan's voice itself is an extraordinary tool capable of sounding completely at home singing almost anything -- it's hard to tell where her range begins and ends, because she simply never sounds as if she's straining. But her greatest gift is for figuring out exactly what a song needs and not trying to do anything more." - Spin

"Kelly Hogan has always made smart, tasteful records. But " I Like To Keep Myself In Pain," her first studio album in 11 years, smacks of being definitive..." - Washington Post
