Glen Hansard Debuts "Wheels On Fire" On NPR Music
In support of his third solo album Between Two Shores, acclaimed singer-songwriter Glen Hansard has revealed "Wheels On Fire,” with NPR Music who notes, “the new [track] looses a rollicking side to go with a rich infusion of horns and organs.
Directing his hope and optimism toward defiance against unnamed leaders — "I won't be no puppet on a string," he seethes — Hansard conjures an infectious and welcome dose of fists-up intensity.” The song follows the albums culminating track previously released, “Time Will Be The Healer,” which NPR praises for showcasing “elegant uplift,” while it serves as a hopeful plea to a forlorn lover that also speaks to the way forward in the current social climate.
In celebration of Between Two Shores, Hansard announced he will perform an intimate solo acoustic show at New York City’s Town Hall on January 19, 2018, the same day the album comes out via Anti-. With a full band performance on January 21st at Brooklyn Steele, Hansard will also launch a U.S. tour in March 2018 beginning with two Walt Disney Concert Hall performances on March 10 and 11, the second performance to be joined by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. (Full March tour dates below).
Between Two Shores, which follows 2015’s GRAMMY nominated Didn’t He Ramble and 2012’s solo debut Rhythm and Repose, is a ten-track collection produced for the first time by Hansard himself. The result of more than six years of writing and recording, Between Two Shores came together in only a matter of weeks.
After booking time at Black Box Studios in France last Spring with the original idea of taking inventory of his songbook, Hansard trove through his previous sessions, various ideas and home recordings. A sketch of an unplanned record quickly took shape, featuring material captured in New York and Chicago with a revolving cast of musicians, including Brian Blade, Thomas Bartlett, Brad Albetta and Rob Moose along with touring band members Joseph Doyle, Rob Bochnik, Graham Hopkins, Justin Carroll, Michael Buckley, Ronan Dooney and Curtis Fowlkes.
Between Two Shores captures that feeling of the big soulful sound of Hansard’s large touring band, while still retaining the intimate introspective nature of his acoustic shows.
