PAORO recently shared the origins of “Second Door” with Consequence of Sound revealing that the song was inspired by the Tibetan concept of the “Bardo,” a transitory state, where the soul dwells after death and before entering a new life. The idea guided the path of animation for the Eduardo Meza directed clip.
Meza commented, “I've always thought Doe's voice has a celestial character, especially in her slower tracks. As I'm often drawn to narratives where the characters go through some sort of transcendence, The Second Door seemed an ideal track for me to work on both sonically and conceptually. And after a quick phone call with her we both seemed aligned in the direction. All we knew with certainty was the beginning and the end. We knew we wanted a character going through some sort of inter-dimensional odyssey, but neither of us exactly knew what the process was going to be like. I suppose not having a storyboard was the most genuine way of submitting myself to the same process of uncertainty and adventure of the main character itself, and let the track dictate the movements, actions and transformations that happen throughout. I think the best decision was to not give a clear resolution to the ending, as they say, things never die, they only change form.
“Second Door" was produced by renowned producer Jimmy Hogarth who has previously worked with Amy Winehouse, James Blunt, James Bay and others. In addition, the track features guitar work and ambient sounds care of Leo Abrahams, who produced Regina Spektor’s recent Remember Us to Life album and frequently collaborates with musician Brian Eno.
