BETTYE LaVETTE BEGINS THE NEW YEAR TWO SOLD-OUT SHOWS IN NYC
BETTYE LaVETTE is starting off the year with two sold out shows in New York this weekend, beginning Friday night at City Winery and Saturday night at Joe’s Pub. Last year saw Bettye release a new album, Thankful N’ Thoughtful (Anti- Records), as well as a riveting autobiography, A Woman Like Me (Blue Rider Press/Penguin), co written with David Ritz to national critical acclaim.
The album topped numerous “Best of 2012” lists including Jon Pareles’ Top Ten in the New York Times, where he noted: “BETTYE LAVETTE ‘Thankful N’ Thoughtful’ (Anti-) Along with a rip-roaring autobiography, ‘A Woman Like Me’ (Blue Rider Press), the soul singer Bettye LaVette marked her 50th year as a performer with this cannily chosen assortment of songs about alienation: romantic, political, psychological and philosophical. Her voice bites into every one, from Neil Young’s ‘Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere’ to Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy,’ drawing lessons informed by her unerring sense of drama and by the scarred resilience of the blues.” Meanwhile, Huffington Post’s Dusty Wright had Bettye in his top picks, asserting: “Bettye is one of the chosen few who could sing the phone book and make your heart melt.” Bettye also made the best of lists in Relix, Paste, Hits, to cite a few.
