Beth Orton Rolling Stone Premiere
Rolling Stone is exclusively premiering "Magpie" today from Beth Orton's new album, Sugaring Season (Anti-). Haunting and insistent, the track builds from spare acoustic guitar to an intricately orchestrated crescendo of strings, drums, and layered vocals: href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/song-premiere-beth-orton-magpie-20120813">Rolling Stone
"I am obsessed by the birds outside of my window," she told Rolling Stone about the song's inspiration. "Wherever I live I am followed by two blue jays. These birds have many stories attached to them. There is a lot of superstition and conjecture around their stories. These birds hold wisdom for me. They are also oblivious to the fear they raise in others. All the time people are inventing stories to justify actions that often have no bearing on reality. I have experienced being silenced and this song came out of that. It was my way of keeping my voice and a sense of freedom alive."
