Antibalas are coming to your town
Antibalas Sets Extensive U.S. Tour Behind Acclaimed Anti- Debut Security Heralded By URB as “A Perfect Musical Statement”
In advance of its imminent Anti- debut and extensive eight week U.S. tour, Antibalas – the socially-diverse and politically-minded New York collective – is drawing rave reviews for the John (Tortoise, Stereolab, Tom Ze) McEntire-produced Security. In celebration of the album's March 6th release date, Antibalas' dozen-strong line-up revs up to entertain the people once again. Beginning with what promises to be an electric hometown show at Brooklyn's Warsaw on March 10th, the band will then hit SXSW for a series of concerts, followed by record release galas at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and the Troubador in Los Angeles.
Antibalas' newest full-length gem, Security, pushes itself beyond the revolutionary Afrobeat blueprint the group used as a launching pad in the late '90s. The album is just the latest example of the group's penchant for taking risks and the critics have taken notice. "This funk is organic," Filter raves, calling Security "an all-time great pop record proved to have the wherewithal and talent to stand alone." Meanwhile, Urb, in a glowing 4 1/2 star review, calls it "a treasure trove of eclectic beats, energetic sounds, political musings and agreeable voices that come together in a perfect musical statement." Moreover, Spin, in its upcoming issue, touts, "Antibalas' Afrobeat sound scatters into so many hyphenated juxtapositions that they've practically become their own genre."
One of the hardest-working bands on the planet, Antibalas – whose name means "bulletproof" in Spanish – weaves a rich tapestry of latin, jazz, classical, funk, reggae and soul into its horn-driven performances. Known worldwide as veterans of festivals from Bonnaroo, Coachella and Bumbershoot to Glastonbury, Montreaux and Roskilde, the band has shared stage and studio with the likes of TV on the Radio, Baaba Maal, Gomez and Medeski, Martin and Wood. In keeping with their collaborative approach, two members of Antibalas – keyboardist Victor Axelrod and bassist Nick Movshon –will also be performing alongside recent Brit Award winner (Best Female Artist) Amy Winehouse when she appears March 12th on The Late Show With David Letterman.
