Andy Shauf's Foxwarren Release Self-Titled Album Today
Growing up in scattered small towns across the Canadian prairies, the band Foxwarreninitially bonded over Pedro the Lion and drew influence from The Band and Paul Simon.
Comprised of Andy Shauf (guitars/keys/vocals) and his childhood friends Dallas Bryson (guitar/vocals) and brothers Darryl Kissick (bass) and Avery Kissick (drums & percussion), Foxwarren’s self-titled album comes out today via ANTI- Records; listen and order it HERE. Captured on 16 mm film, the new music video for the song “To Be” features zoom shots done in the style of Wes Anderson that focus in on characters who appear alone in expansive spaces. Watch it HERE.
“Sometimes the simplest ideas are the hardest to execute,” explained the video’s directors, Ft. Langley. “Our concept for ‘To Be’ – featuring tryptic of introspective portraits – came together at the 11th hour, despite having been originally written a year and a half ago. Locations fell through, actors dropped out, gear malfunctioned; what could go wrong did go wrong. Yet the final film manages to reflect, in its own scrappy way, the heartbreaking loneliness of Foxwarren’s song, despite breaking our own hearts a little along the way.”
“To Be” was one of the first songs written for the project. “We tinkered with it for ages and ended up drastically reworking it the weekend it was recorded, but we knew early on that it was going to be the opening song on the record,” Darryl said.
“It was a guitar riff that I'd been playing for a few years at least, trying to figure out what to do with it,” adds Shauf. “It went through quite a few versions if I remember correctly. Foxwarren have a bad habit of never finishing vocal melodies and lyrics before we finish the music, so it made it a bit tricky and ended up being overhauled at the last minute.”
Watch the band perform select tracks from the album at Toronto’s Starlight Diner for CBC Music First Play Live HERE. Shauf is currently on a fall solo tour and will perform in Los Angeles on December 2 and 3.
